Savagery in Silk: Embracing Your Wild Side
A wild woman taps into her instinctive, untamed side. She demonstrates authenticity, passion, and creative power. She connects deeply with herself, is hard to govern, faces suffering head on and yet and still, she carries on. She is alluring because she is perceived untamed but more importantly, she is free.

Historically, women have been molded by social norms of their culture. For example, norms were challenged in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, when vast groups of feminine activists fought to alter the norms to liberate women.

Silk, as it pertains to a woman, carries rich symbolism across cultures and history. It is said to have embodied femininity, elegance, and allure.
While silk symbolizes the delicateness of a woman, female savagery as a notion is built around her being ignorant, irrational and emotional.
A woman’s primal instincts can override the “silky” societal norms and moral constraints. Our self regarding interests and the pursuit of our individual power longs to precede social cooperation. This may be regarded as being wild.
I often find myself struggling at the intersection of being wild and conservative. It is likely that other women have a similar experience.
Wildness or conservatism may create individual conflict in many aspects of our lives.
Socially - Non-conforming vs. Traditional
Sexually - Unconventional expression vs. Modesty
Professionally - Entrepreneurship vs. Safe pathway
Politically - Progressive change advocacy vs. Stability
Authentically - Self expression vs. Conformity
Family - Priority of personal ambitions vs. gender norm
In this chapter of my life, my wild and conservative sides have become less discrete. Instead of being rivals, they are becoming harmoniously woven together. Tradition has been the rich soil from which my wildflowers have grown. As a result I am bold, yet cautious, free spirited yet rooted.
My decision is to focus on honoring both facets by freely enjoying the collaboration between the wisdom of conservatism and the wildness within me that has at times been placed behind bars. Goals will be reimagined with them both in mind moving forward. I anticipate the strain between them will spur a new vision, newly found confidence, creativity and personal growth.
While I am conducting a new way of experiencing my life, I am unsure of the consequences. I am sure that I don’t want to concern myself with those who want me to live in a way that makes them comfortable. Will people accept how I roll now?
Truthfully, I don’t care.
There is no need to create a perfect balance of conservatism and wildness. At times, you will feel defiant and the desire to soar wild and free. Other times, you will be drawn to the safety and sturdiness of tradition. The two can coexist so go wherever your soul leads you.
The journey from conformity to authenticity is a woman’s personal masterpiece. A metamorphosis from the silky stitches of society’s rules to the rawness of your spirit and vice versa involves self liberation so that either silkiness or savagery can flow freely. Let it flow and do it unapologetically.
How does your wild side show up in your life, if at all?
